About the Northeast Beat

The Northeast Beat is a grassroots, independent website dedicated to raising the quality and diversity of news and arts coverage in Northeast Minneapolis. We aim to use words, pictures, audio and video to tell interesting and important stories overlooked by other media, and to increase connections in the community by providing a respectful, interactive forum for discussion of issues.

Journalist Dan Haugen, the Northeast Beat’s editor and publisher, started the site in November 2006. He is a former radio host and newspaper reporter who now works as a freelance writer and lives in the Waite Park neighborhood. Other content contributors include a small group of volunteer bloggers and citizen journalists who also live in Northeast.

We presently do not accept advertising or donations, nor do we have any formal ties to neighborhood organizations, businesses or government bodies. Should this policy change in the future, any gifts, payments or partnerships would be clearly and prominently disclosed on the website and would not be allowed to directly influence news coverage.

How can you help? You can share a news tip, let us know about an event, or leave a comment on the stories you read. Let us know what’s going on in your neighborhood. We’re always looking for writers, reporters, photographers and others who would like to volunteer. Contact Dan Haugen, editor, at editor@northeastbeat.com or 612-216-1057.

And tell a friend about the Northeast Beat! Help us spread the word and build a community.
